On December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. Consisting of six carriers, five submarines, and over 350 aircraft, the Japanese attack killed over 2,000 Americans, sunk or damaged 20 ships, and destroyed 188 American planes. It is one of the worst disasters in American history.
While the attack was a significant blow to the American Navy, it was hardly the preemptive knockout blow the Japanese were hoping for. Instead, it acted as the final straw that pushed the United States into World War II, and directly led to the downfall of Imperial Japan.
Here are 25 rarely-seen photos from the Attacks on Pearl Harbor.
